At school, Garry ("G.D") Abson was studying Russian history when the “Protect and Survive” leaflets were sent to every family in the country. He became fascinated by the massive, enigmatic country that was seemingly intent on incinerating him and his young friends. This continued to university where he took an option in Russian politics as the Soviet Union collapsed.

For research, Garry was assisted by several serving and ex-members of Saint Petersburg police units and other “Piter” natives.

In his MOTHERLAND series, Senior Detective Natalya Ivanova's investigations lead her into the dark heart of Putin's Russia.
